Built in the 12th century under the reign of Jayavarman VII, the city can be accessed via several remarkable gates, fascinating attractions in themselves. At its heart is the colossal Mahayana shrine to Buddha, Bayon Temple, which features 216 stone faces staring serenely in all directions. Nearby is the iconic Terrace of the Elephants, a 300m-long platform decorated with grand staircases and spiritual carvings.
